Sucralose, marketed under the brand name SPLENDA, is a non-nutritive, high-intensity sweetener made from ordinary sugar (sucrose). It tastes like sugar and performs virtually like sugar without the calories. This is because the body does not recognize it as sugar or as a source of carbohydrates. Sucralose is not absorbed by the body and passes through the digestive system quickly after being consumed.
In the United States, the FDA approved Sucralose in 1998 as a general purpose sweetener. Sucralose is used around the world as an ingredient in low-calorie processed foods and beverages, and as a tabletop sweetener that can be added directly to food and beverage products.
