The ExtendBarTM is a snack bar designed by an endocrinologist and diabetes specialist to help reduce the incidence of night time hypoglycemia. Clinical studies have shown that the Extend Bar, when eaten as a bedtime snack, results in a 75% reduction in episodes of night time hypoglycemia and a 28% reduction in morning hyperglycemia. ExtendBar can be very helpful for athletes who experience delayed hypoglycemia after a day of exercise. (See also The After Exercise Blues.)
ExtendBar contains uncooked cornstarch which converts very slowly in the bloodstream into glucose (see chart to the right). There are two formulations -- the original "crunch" variety and the new ExtendBar Delight variety that uses Splenda in place of fructose as a sweetener. All ExtendBar products are gluten free.
ExtendBar was developed by Dr. Fran Kaufman, Professor of Pediatrics, Endocrinology, Metabolism at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
