Money for Kids in Michigan Who Want Pumps

I am trying to get some state funding, in the way of excess money from the cigarette tax in our state (MI), to help fund a pump clinic at the University of Michigan for children ages 5 to 10. They have already used up the funding for the older kids program and need to hire more staff to deal with the extra visits, support groups, etc.

My daughter, Alexandria, has had diabetes for 4 1/2 years, since she was 2 1/2. I am having a hard time controlling her blood sugars, and she is on 4 shots a day right now. My endo has been great, and tells me that Alexandria is a perfect candidate for the pump. However, she cannot put my daughter on it without the funding for the clinic, so I am in a unique situation. My endo agrees with me on the pump, but it is still out of reach for me.

To help, they have asked me to contact Senator John J. H. Schwarz, Republican of District 24, who is in charge of the committee that controls the cigarette tax money. I would like to ask all who are interested to please contact him at

Thank you very much,

Kathy Green
