Jeff Lambert's Photo Hi my name is Jeff Lambert and I have been a diabetic for 24 years. I am 27 years old and have not had any diabetic complications. Having had diabetes for this long has not held me back from attaining success with my health, business and social life!!! My doctors can't understand why I haven't had any diabetic problems as of yet. I attribute all of my good fortune to exercising daily, watching what I eat and testing my blood sugars 4-5 times a day.

I am a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and a U.S. Weightlifting Coach. My job allows me the time and space to workout regularly. I know that many diabetics do not have a job like mine, but that should not be any excuse for avoiding exercise!!! My opinion is that if you want to avoid diabetic complications, you better start taking care of yourself today!!! Go for a walk every night after dinner. Buy an inexpensive stationary bike and ride it before or after dinner. Remember, these are only examples, you may exercise whenever you can fit it in your busy schedule. Start a strength training program and workout 2-3 times a week. This could mean getting a personal trainer, joining a health club, or purchasing some workout bands and working out at your home. It is your choice, but please, do something more active than watching television.

I realize that everybody handles their diabetes differently, but let me make a couple of suggestions which have helped me out: exercise daily; weights and cardiovascular activities, eat a very healthy diet; low in fat and avoid foods filled with sugar, test your blood sugars before major meals, workouts and bedtime.

If you plan on starting an exercise program, please check with your doctor first. Test your blood sugar before each workout. You don't want to workout with sugars too low or too high. Exercise can cause your blood sugars to fluctuate. The key thing to remember is to keep your blood sugars in a normal range.

Exercise will give you more energy, help control blood sugars, keep you in shape and may help decrease the chances of diabetic side effects!
