The OneTouch Basic is no longer being sold. This page remains online for historical purposes.
The OneTouch Basic is LifeScan's entry-level reflectance meter. It is designed for people who are interested in a simple, basic meter and aren't interested in the advanced data management features built into the OneTouch Profile or other, newer meters. Newer electronic test strip technology has outpaced the reflectance technology used in the OneTouch product line, however.
The OneTouch Basic uses the same test strips as the OneTouch Profile, but lacks the sophisticated built-in data management capabilites of the Profile. The OneTouch Basic is a simple, easy-to-use blood glucose meter with no frills. It has a large display with messages in 15 langauges. LifeScan has improved the memory to include 75 tests with date and time, added a data downloading port, and the Basic now uses AAA batteries.
With the addition of a data port, the OneTouch Basic is an almost acceptable choice if you prefer the older reflectance technology. However, we prefer LifeScan's OneTouch Ultra meter, which uses much less blood and produces results in 5 seconds instead of 45. The newer electronic test strip meters have simply outpaced the old OneTouch reflectance technology.

In the fall of 2003, LifeScan introduced a new test strip for their Basic and Profile meters that uses half as much blood -- 5 microliters vs. 10. The strip should be available in stores in late 2003 to early 2004.

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
