The Accu-Chek Instant is no longer available. The review is maintained for historical reasons.
The Accu-Chek Instant is being discontinued, though test strips will be available for several years. Once Roche's fastest meter at about 12 seconds, the Accu-Check Active is Roche's new speed leader at five seconds.
Testing with the Accu-Chek Instant is easy. After turning on the meter, you insert a test strip into the slot in the meter. Universal symbols appear on the display to prompt you along the way. You must then apply a drop of blood to the test area on the strip, completely covering the yellow test pad. The Accu-Chek Instant requires a larger amount of blood than many other meters, but our 8-year-old tester was able to provide an adequate sample during our extended evaluation. Insufficient blood will result in an inaccurate reading. You can tell whether you have an adequate sample by looking at the front or back of the test strip, as the test strip images demonstrate.
The Accu-Chek Instant must be calibrated to the test strips in each vial. Calibration is easy but somewhat more time consuming that with other meters. Each vial has a four digit number on the side, such as 3911. Using the left button on the meter (the one with the up and down pointing arrows), you increment or decrement a counter to reach the number on the side of the test strip vial. If the meter is at 2000 and you need to reach 9999, it takes a few minutes for the incrementing number to advance to the new number. The longer you hold down the button, the faster the digits move, but it still takes a while.
The Accu-Chek Instant is quite small (4 x 2.5 x 5/8 inches, 100 x 55 x 15 mm) and lightweight (1.75 ounces, or 50 grams). The meter comes with a form-fitting plastic cover, small soft-side carrying bag, and a lancing device. The Accu-Chek Instant uses new test strips, which are readily available in both 50 and 100 strip packages.
Features of the Accu-Chek Instant include:
- Very fast test results
- Safety warning if the temperature is outside the acceptable range (+64 F to +90 F, +18 C to +32 C)
- 9 test memory
- Visual backup reading of test strips using color chart on strip bottle

The reviews of products are the opinion of children with DIABETES. Each product is reviewed with a single purpose: to determine if the product is suitable for use by children with type 1 diabetes, their parents, and, to a lesser degree, adults with type 1 diabetes. There are many products aimed at adults with type 2 diabetes that are not appropriate or suitable for children or adults with type 1 diabetes.
