The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) is beginning a trial in a limited number of individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus not requiring a kidney transplant. Patients included in this clinical trial will receive infusions of human islet cells and bone marrow cells from the same donor. Enclosed in this web site are files that include information about the DRI, a description of this study criteria and a letter directed to your doctor.
Many of the recent media reports have focused, prematurely, on "a diabetes cure". As responsible members of the scientific community, we caution you that our new clinical trial is investigational. As in any pilot study, there is no guarantee of success. Concrete results from this study will not be available for at least one year.
After downloading and reviewing the files, you may take them to your physician and discuss the criteria, necessary tests, as well as your potential participation in this trial. To be enrolled, as a participant in this trial, you must meet the required criteria, complete the preliminary tests and have your physician send the test results directly to us.
Thank you for your interest. Please contact us if you have questions.
Sincerely,
Gary Kleiman
Director of Medical Development
