Use of Lispro Insulin Instead of Regular in an Insulin Pump Improves Control

In Improvement of HbA_1c and Blood Glucose Stability in IDDM Patients Treated With Lispro Insulin Analog in External Pumps, by V. Melki, MD, et al, Diabetes Care 21:977-82, 1998, researchers report that the use of Lispro Insulin instead of Regular in an insulin pump improves both HbA1c and overall blood glucose values, while at the same time reducing the number of serious low blood sugars.

In the study, patients used Lispro Insulin or Actrapid (Regular) for three months, then switched to the other insulin. 38 patients who completed the study. A1c levels dropped from 7.74 (+/- 0.20) to 7.11 (+/1 0.15%) with Lispro and from 7.97 (+/- 0.13) to 7.88 (+/- 0.16%) with Actrapid. Mean daily blood sugars were also lower when using Lispro compared with Actrapid (7.93 +/- 0.15 mmol/l [142.7 mg/dl] vs. 8.61 +/- 0.18 [154.9 mg/dl]).

At the end of the study, patients were asked which insulin they wanted to continue using. 36 of 38 (95%) chose Lispro.
