Puberty Linked to Accelerated Process of Early Kidney Damage in Diabetes

The onset of puberty in children with diabetes leads to an accelerated increase in urinary albumin exretion rate (AER), an indicator of kidney damage, according to Enhanced Progression of Urinary Albumin Excretion in IDDM During Puberty by L. Barkai, MD, PhD, et al Diabetes Care 21:1019-23, 1998. According to the study, AER increased significantly over a three-year period during and after puberty, but not before puberty.

The researchers recommend early testing for microalbuminuria in all children with diabetes as soon as they enter puberty.
