ADA to Continue Support for CampsThe followinig reply was received to an inquiry from children with DIABETES regarding the possibility of the ADA discontinuing its financial support for camps for kids with diabetes:
The American Diabetes Association has no plans to abandon its support of camps for children with diabetes. Currently the Association sponsors over 40 camps and provides referrals and financial support to quality camps operated by other groups nationwide. As with all other Association activities, camping programs are continually assessed to assure resources are being optimally used, and for camps in particular, that a safe environment is assured. In addition, the Association also supports the activities of the Diabetes Camping Association, which was recently established to promote communication, provide education, share resources, aand serve as a national voice to advance diabetes camping programs.
Recognizing that youth are the leaders of tomorrow, the Association has also outlined mechanisms in which youth can be involved beyond camping. Youth play an integral role in Delegates for Diabetes, the Association's grassroots advocacy program. In addition, a special youth component is included in each year's national Public Policy Leadership Forum.
