US Availability of GLUCOMETER^® DEX^TM Delayed Until 1999

On March 31, 1998, Bayer announced that the GLUCOMETER^® DEX^TM Blood Glucose Monitoring System would be available in the United States beginning the first quarter of 1999. The delay is due to the company's need to increase production capacity to meet anticipated demand.

The DEX^TM Meter is currently available in twelve countries:

• As the GLUCOMETER^® ESPRIT^TM Meter in:
  Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain

• As the GLUCOMETER^® DEX^TM Meter in:
  Germany, Canada, Japan, Belgium, the Netherlands

The company promises to continue to supply the "cartridges" for the 40,000 DEX^TM meters that were given out to U.S. patients, at no charge, until the commercial availability of the product early next year.
