Studies Point to Extra Care Needed When Using Humalog in PumpsMost people with insulin pumps now use Humalog instead of Regular insulin (see our poll on the subject). The fast acting nature of Humalog, coupled with its quicker dissipation, provides a more normal insulin response and makes it easier to use. With Regular in the pump, you needed to bolus well before meals to get optimum insulin effect. Not so with Humalog -- you bolus and eat, or eat and bolus.
The concern of using only Humalog in a pump is that, in the event of an undetected problem with pump, you will quickly run out of on-board insulin and be in danger of developing DKA sooner than if you used Regular. To help reduce this risk, pump users are encouraged to test their blood sugar often, usually more than four times per day. Testing for ketones when high will help identify problems too.
Pump users should also have on hand a pen injector or syringe with Humalog to inject in the event of a problem with the pump. Kids who use pumps are encouraged to keep a pen with Humalog at school.
