Caffeine Improves Hypoglycemia AwarenessA study published in the April 2000 issue of Diabetes Care concludes that modest intake of caffeine "enhances the intensity of hypoglycemia warning symptoms in patients with type 1 diabetes without altering the prevailing standard of glycemic control or increasing the incidence of severe hypoglycemic episodes."
Study participants -- all adults -- ingested 250-400 mg of caffeine, equivalent to 2-4 cups of drip-brewed coffee. This amount of caffeine was enough to improve hypoglycemia recognition. Equally important, caffeine had no effect on blood glucose control or HbA1c levels.
The study gave no guidance on how these results might be applied to children with diabetes.
