Longer Infusion Site Lifetime with NovoLog Reported

In a letter to the editors of Diabetes Care entitled Pediatric Use of Insulin Pumps: Longer Infusion Site Lifetime with NovoLog (Diabetes Care 2002 Sep;25(9):1663), Denis Becker, MD, reports a case history of a 12-year-old boy with type 1 diabetes who switched to NovoLog insulin and experienced a significant increase in infusion set life, from 1-2 days with Humalog to 4-5 days with NovoLog. Dr. Becker notes that "Although the mechanism for improved infusion site duration with insulin aspart [NovoLog, Ed.] is not known, the response is consistent over the lifetime of the infusion site, and has not been accompanied by an increased frequency of hypoglycemia."

Kids and adults using insulin pumps who are experiencing short infusion set life may wish to discuss this letter with their diabetes team.
