JDF ANNUAL CONFERENCE LOBBY DAY A HUGE SUCCESS!
Over 400 JDF volunteer and staff advocates, led by International Chairman Mary Tyler Moore, participated in hundreds of congressional visits to House and Senate members on Thursday, June 4 to urge support for finding a cure for diabetes. Participants were briefed before the visits by Congressman George Nethercutt (R-WA), Chairman of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus and a former chapter president from Spokane, Washington. JDF advocates urged substantially increased funding for diabetes research for both the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) by 15%. Many also asked their member to write a letter of commitment to the 15% increase to the Chairmen of the House and Senate Labor, Health and Human Services Appropriations Subcommittees which oversee NIH funding. The JDF web site at http://www.jdfcure.org will soon be updated with more conference updates.
CONGRESSIONAL DIABETES CAUCUS 184 MEMBERS STRONG AND GROWING.
Thanks to the hundreds of JDF advocates who participated in Capitol Hill visits during the recent annual conference, the Congressional Diabetes Caucus in the House of Representatives now includes 184 members. Representatives George Nethercutt (R-WA) and Elizabeth Furse (D-OR) who both have children with Type I diabetes lead the caucus.
CAUCUS CHAIRMEN SEND LETTER URGING DIABETES SUPPORT TO ALL 435 MEMBERS.
A "Dear Colleague" letter signed by Caucus Chairmen Nethercutt and Furse was sent to all 435 members of the House of Representatives to inform members of JDF's Lobby Day and mission. Representative Nethercutt also delivered a one-minute floor statement about JDF, diabetes and finding a cure. This statement can be found in the Congressional Record for Thursday, June 4. The text of his speech:
Mr. NETHERCUTT. Mr. Speaker, I rise today to advise my colleagues that representatives of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation will be meeting with each of you today to advocate more Federal funding for diabetes research to cure this very serious disease. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death and disability in America.
Now these JDF representatives are not paid lobbyists. They are individuals from all walks of life, of Democrat and Republican Party affiliation. They are male and female, Democrats, Republicans, of all religions, and only caring about one thing. That is curing diabetes .
They will tell you their personal story about diabetes . They will ask you to become a member of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, which now numbers 159 Members. They will ask my colleagues to show that they care about diabetes .
So I urge my colleagues to welcome these individuals to your offices, listen to their stories, fund the Federal research to cure diabetes, and welcome them to Capitol Hill.
IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO WRITE TO YOUR MEMBERS URGING 15% INCREASES FOR NIH AND NIDDK.
You should have all received the May 15th legislative ALERT asking you to write your legislators about funding increases and your personal story. There is still time to write your letters if you haven't done so already. The tentative schedule for the appropriations bills to be debated in both subcommittees is the end of June or the second week in July, immediately following Independence Day recess. All members of Congress, whether on the Appropriations Committee or not need to hear from you now! Please be sure to copy the JDF Government Relations Office on your letters. Visit the JDF web site to read the ALERT.
