Miss America Contestants Support Diabetes Research
Miss Virginia 1998, Nicole Johnson, and Miss New York 1998, Deanna Herrera, are competing on September 19 for the Miss America title. However, last month, they joined forces with JDF to advocate for increased diabetes research funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Both Ms. Johnson and Ms. Herrera have type 1 diabetes and use an insulin pump. Each has also committed to using her reign as state pageant winner to advocate for diabetes-related issues, especially the need to find a cure through the support of research. Should either one win the Miss America competition, this diabetes platform will be advanced nationally.
During meetings with members of the Virginia and New York Congressional delegations, Ms. Johnson and Ms. Herrera asked for a 15-percent increase for the NIH and the National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to build a foundation for a substantial increase in diabetes research funding across the NIH. They also asked their representatives to join the Congressional Diabetes Caucus.
Please be sure to support both Ms. Johnson and Ms. Herrera during the competition in Atlantic City on September 19.
