American Diabetes Association And DREDF Calls California Parents Of Children With Diabetes
The Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF), a leading national law and policy center in disability civil rights, is continuing to challenge the California Department of Education (CDE) on the issue of insulin administration in public schools. Despite legislative and legal initiatives undertaken by DREDF and the American Diabetes Association, many children with diabetes continue to experience difficulties getting assistance with insulin administration in California public schools.
DREDF and ADA have been working with parents of children with diabetes individually to ensure that their child's medical needs are met during the school day. But we need a broader policy solution that will provide relief to all children with diabetes who attend public school in California.
We all need to work together to make safe insulin available to all California students with diabetes. We seek parents of public school students with diabetes in California who are willing to be part a network of parents who can be called upon for any or all of the following efforts:
- Legal Advocacy: Participating as a named plaintiff in possible administrative complaints or lawsuits against local school districts or the California Department of Education;
- Parent Advocacy: Become part of a local support network of parents of children with diabetes sharing your experiences and support in accessing care for children with diabetes in public schools;
- Media Advocacy: Agreeing to be interviewed by media outlets or by writing letters to the editor/Op-Ed pieces on the topic of good diabetes management at school and how that can be accomplished;
- Legislative Advocacy: Provide testimony on diabetes management and your personal experiences, assist in letter, phone and email campaigns to state legislators.
If you can help, please contact Lisa Murdock of the American Diabetes Association (contact information below). Please be advised that although responses may be shared with DREDF as part of our collaborative efforts, ADA and DREDF will honor any request for information to be kept strictly confidential.
