The High Sierra 4-H club of Truckee walked in the Walk for a Cure for Diabetes on October 14, 2001, at the University of Nevada, Reno (U.N.R.). The walk is sponsored by JDRF (the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
Members of the club who attended the walk are Courtney and Kiersten Ridgel, Kyle and Colin Shane, and Lindsey Buchanan. Four leaders and parents also walked. The walk was six miles (10 km) long. The course took us twice around the college grounds. The walk had 1500 walkers participating.
A sum of over $225,000 will go from this event to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes. Our club raised a total of $521.
My own sister at the age of eighteen months was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She is now eight years old and doing her own shots
twice a day and up. She also tests her own blood sugar at least three times a day. Living with this has taught my family to be
thankful and we are always hoping to find a cure. Other club members have family or friends with diabetes as well.
With this we would like to thank the 1500 walkers and all supporters of the Walk for a Cure for Diabetes.
