Question:
From Ohio:I received an e-mail from someone who claims that taking chromium and vanadium will cure Type 1 diabetes. He even referenced a medical journal article from 1957. What is the current medical position on this subject?
Answer:
Chromium and vanadium are not thought to be harmful, but there have been no recent scientific studies that demonstrate their efficacy in treating diabetes. Certainly, they do not replace standard diabetes treatment programs, and should not be considered a replacement for insulin or diabetes pills. There's another question about the use of chromium in diabetes that was posted on June 20, 1996.
