Question: Is there somewhere to buy blood glucose strips at a reasonable price? Currently, they cost me almost 80 cents each [US$0.80]. They are very expensive!
Answer:
The strips are very expensive, and the so-called "generic strips" that have been on the market are sometimes unreliable, and not worth using. That leaves several alternatives:
- Ask your Diabetes Team if they know any local stores that sell the strips at a reasonable price.
- Check the listings at the back of Diabetes Forecast magazine for prices (be sure to figure in the costs of shipping and handling).
- How often are you testing? If you are presently testing 4 times a day, and have stable blood sugar levels, perhaps you could cut back to 2 tests a day: sometimes checking the sugar before breakfast and supper, and sometimes before the noon meal and bedtime.
