Question:

Co-workers at my company are "hit up" for various worthy causes frequently, and it's hard to make diabetes a priority since it can be managed to the point of allowing a relatively "normal" life. Do you have any suggestions for separating this particular cause from all the others in order to garner donations?

Answer:

Soliciting for individual good causes at work is usually a miserable task, which is why many bigger organisations have a single giving drive for the United Way. However, if you start in a small way by organising something that is fun for the families, such as a treasure hunt with a local bigwig presenting unusual prizes, a fancy dress walk or cross country skiing or a bike ride at so much a kilometer for diabetes, you may do surprisingly well. It takes a lot more work and imagination of course; but if it works it will grow and even become a local institution.
