Do you recommend diluting insulin when small doses are required? When our son was 2 and 3 years old we often used 1/2 - 1 unit doses.

Yes, many young children must dilute their insulin to carefully measure up small amounts of insulin accurately and make small changes in doses at a time. Both Eli Lilly and Novolin supply diluents for all their insulins (except lispro insulin (Humalog® brand)) free of charge. You can make up any dilution necessary to accurately draw up the dose you need. Some infants may need to change their dose by 1/10 of a unit or less at a time and this is impossible without using diluted insulin.
