Question:

Do you recommend diluting insulin when small doses are required? When our son was 2 and 3 years old we often used 1/2 - 1 unit doses.

Answer:

Yes, many young children must dilute their insulin to carefully measure up small amounts of insulin accurately and make small changes in doses at a time. Both Eli Lilly and Novolin supply diluents for all their insulins (except lispro insulin (Humalog« brand)) free of charge. You can make up any dilution necessary to accurately draw up the dose you need. Some infants may need to change their dose by 1/10 of a unit or less at a time and this is impossible without using diluted insulin.
