Question:

From Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA:

What level of comfort is provided by the current infusion sets of today's insulin pumps? Dose your skin get irritated with three days of being stuck?

Answer:

The most comfortable infusion set, according to my diabetes nurse educator who's tried them all, is Disetronic's Tender 2 (Product Number 300.0180 for the 31 inch/80 cm length; 300.0181 for the 43 inch/110 cm version). These products also fit MiniMed's pumps.

Most infusion sets are okay for about two days at least; sometimes up to five days. After a few days, there are several thing that might happen that would require you to change tubing:

  • irritation, pain, and redness, or
  • malfunction, with rising blood sugar, or
  • blood leaking from the skin tissues out along the needle track onto the nearby skin.
