Question:

From British Columbia, Canada:

I am a 36 year old type I diabetic and have a 8 year old daughter who was diagnosed 18 months ago. My question is, are they using acarbose with Type I, and if so are they having much success?

Answer:

In theory, acarbose (Precose™) could be used with Type 1 diabetes, as it retards the absorption of carbohydrates from the gastrointestinal tract to the bloodstream.

Several of my patients with Type 1 diabetes have tried acarbose, but no one seems very much convinced it's helped at all.
