Question: From New York, New York, USA: Has anyone determined what the odds are that children get Type 1 diabetes (without diabetes in the family) and what is the average age of a child with diabetes? Answer: The risk for a child with no diabetes in family to get IDDM varies from the by geographical area. Generally speaking, the risk is 1% by age 50. According to latest Eurodiab ACE calculations (referring to 0-14 years), this risk before the 15th birthday ranges from 0.003-0.005 for high risk areas (Finland, Sardinia, Scandinavian countries) to 0.001-0.002 for intermediate risk areas (Western/Mid-Europe area) and 0.0006 for low risk area (such as Macedonia and some regions of France) with a small excess of risk for boys and with a shift to the left in the childhood incidence curves (i.e., more and more cases appearing in the younger age groups -- 5-9 years and 10-14 years).
