Could you please tell me how a one to two year old child with Type 1 diabetes is optimally treated? Is it enough to inject insulin on a regular basis? What kind of insulin is best today? Thank you for your help.
Answer:
It sounds like you should longer discuss your toddler with a pediatric
endocrinologist or pediatric diabetologist well experienced in taking care
of small children with Type 1 diabetes. In such small children, it is very
important to
establish a close contact and dialogue with the pediatric diabetes team in
order to monitor their sugar levels and to adjust (sometimes on a daily
basis) their
insulin dose and food more than to inject insulin on a regular fixed dosage.
Don't worry about type of insulin: every modern insulin, either
semisynthethic human, or analogue
lispro insulin [Humalog®]
if available, is effective. What counts is that good
metabolic control is achieved based on a high quality level of education (to
permit parent's self control and self management ability in this very young
age and in the child themself in older ages).
