Question:

From Florida, USA:

My daughter is 20 months old. She was diagnosed with IDDM when she was 2 1/5 months. We are thinking about taking her to day care. Is there a special day care center for her? If not, can you give suggestions on what to look for in a day care center?

Answer:

United States federal law requires licensed day care facilities to take care of children with diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association has discussed day care problems, and has an e-mail address to write to:

The ADA urges all parents who experience difficulty with day care providers to use the KinderCare and La Petite diabetes policies. For a copy, please contact (703) 299-2059 or send e-mail to advocate@diabetes.org.
