Question: From Buffalo, New York, USA: My son is 5 years old and was diagnosed with Type 1 at 3.5 years of age. He has been in excellent control. He has just recently developed antibodies to his thyroid. Is this very common? Answer: Thyroid insufficiency is common in children with Type 1 Diabetes and it is also a linked disorder of the immune system. About 10% of these children require actual supplementation for a limited time and an equal number will have some enlargement of the thyroid; but can be watched.
