Question: From Long Island, New York, USA: When traveling, we have found it inconvenient to keep insulin cool. Some motels didn't even have ice machines. As we consider travel abroad, we have concerns about refrigeration. Just how important is it to keep insulin refrigerated? Answer: Insulin does not need to be refrigerated. It is, however, quite susceptible to temperature extremes such as freezing or greater than 80 degrees F. Therefore, it's probably advisable to keep it in an insulated pack (found in most large pharmacies) to avoid great temperature fluctuations. Open vials of insulin should be discarded about every 4-6 weeks. SS Original posting 28 Jan 98
