Question:

From Tacoma, Washington, USA:

Our 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 7 months ago. Since then she seems to be using the disease as an excuse for not doing well in school, helping around the house, all sorts of things. Has anyone had a similar situation, and how was it resolved?

Answer:

It is natural for a nine year old to try to get out of doing the things you mentioned! If diabetes works, then a child will try to use it as an excuse. It would be important to address this in a consistent and loving manner. Kids will learn pretty quickly that except during hypoglycemia or illness there should be the same expectations for her as for the other members of the family. This issue also comes up at school. A psychological counselor experienced in diabetes care can help the family with these and general coping issues.
