Question: From Santa Rosa, California, USA: Do high blood sugar levels affect the pH [acid level] of the blood? Do diabetics have any specific problems with enzymes, especially digestive enzymes? Do a percentage of diabetics also have problems with pancreatic enzymes? Answer: High blood sugar levels can affect the blood pH (decreasing it) only when regulation of glucose and fatty acid metabolism are so impaired that diabetic ketoacidosis develops. Diabetic patients do not have any particular problems with digestive enzymes (either the gut or of the exocrine pancreas) unless the case of diabetes mellitus is secondary to chronic pancreatitis.
