My older sister has had diabetes since age four and is currently 30 and on the pump. She has just become pregnant. The doctor is planning on a cesarean because of the diabetes, but is this healthy?
Answer:
Diabetes is not necessarily an indication for a cesarean section. The goal of obstetrical management is to allow a diabetic pregnant woman to have as near normal a pregnancy as possible that will result in a vaginal delivery. Certainly a cesarean section is much riskier to the mother than a vaginal delivery.
