Question:

From Toronto, Ontario, Canada:

Our 5 year old son (diagnosed at 18 months) has not been getting good results with human insulin. We have tried every alternative, but to no avail. Would a switch to pork or beef/pork insulin help his control?

Answer:

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "good results." Blood glucose levels depend on a variety of factors other that the source of the insulin (i.e., whether it's beef, pork or human). Diet, exercise, and the type of insulin program should all be investigated.

A child this age should be under the care of a pediatric diabetes team. If he is, discuss the situation with your son's diabetes team; if he's not, get a referral.
