Question:

From Provo, Utah, USA:

How often should a blood glucose monitor be replaced? How can I find out about promotions on monitors that will lower the price?

Answer:

Blood glucose meters may never need to be replaced if they are providing accurate results and strips are still available. The newer meters have lots of "bells and whistles," but are not necessarily better. Your local big pharmacy such as Osco, Walgreen's, WalMart, or K-Mart should be able to tell you about promotions. Many diabetes centers have free meters to give away, so don't rush out to buy one if you can wait to talk over your prospective replacement meter with your diabetes team.
