Question: From California, USA: My son was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes and Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at 2 1/2 years of age. The symptoms of the arthritis appeared several months prior to the symptoms of the diabetes. Do you think the arthritis triggered the diabetes and do you think if the arthritis had been treated earlier that it would have delayed the onset of the diabetes? Answer: No, the arthritis neither triggered the diabetes, nor would any earlier treatment for the arthritis have delayed the diabetes onset in any way. JRA, being an autoimmune disease, could cluster, sometimes with other autoimmune diseases, in people with Type 1 autoimmune diabetes.
