From San Francisco, California, USA:
My four-year-old daughter has Type 1 diabetes. She has had a flu for 10 days now, where she vomits all that she eats. Any advice?
Lots of Advice!
- Is someone testing her blood sugars, and what are they doing?
- Is someone testing for urine ketones?
- Who administers her insulin? Make sure she is getting it! When kids are sick, they still need their shots.
- Since she's been ill for a while, and is vomiting, she should be seen by a doctor immediately.
[Editor's comment: We all hope this child was doing better soon after the question was written; the advice given here is of course too late to help with the episode of flu in that one particular case.
Our answers are designed for all our readers to think about, to help them if and when their child has similar problems. We certainly hope that the people writing questions to us don't wait for our advice, especially in urgent situations! WWQ]
