Question:

From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA:

What is the long term effect of too much protein in one's diet?

Answer:

It is difficult to say exactly what the effect will be of long-term eating of too much protein; it will depend on the individual. The effect that is most concerning to those of us in the world of diabetes is the issue of overtaxing the kidneys which are vulnerable to damage in people with diabetes. The potential risk of constantly eating more protein than is needed is aggravation of kidney damage.

This is why it is important to test the urine for microalbumin on a routine basis to monitor the ability of the kidneys to keep up with the demands made on them.
