Question: From Kentucky, USA: What percent of Americans have diabetes and do not know it? Answer: The American Diabetes Association estimates that 8 million people in the US have diabetes (both Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes) and another 8 million have undiagnosed diabetes (most likely Type 2). The new guidelines for diagnosis will be very helpful in diagnosing more people and getting treatment to them. The new guidelines include the following: A new level of diagnosis of diabetes with fasting blood sugars over 125 mg/dl or elevated "casual" or two hour postprandial blood sugars of 200 or more. People with a family history of Type 2 diabetes who are over the age of 45 and overweight should be screened yearly for diabetes by their physician. Other additional criteria in the ADA Clinical Standards of Care will make it easier for everyone with diabetes to get medical treatment.
