Question:

From Cincinnati, Ohio, USA:

If a diabetic girl has a child at say age 17 or so, is the baby going to have a good chance to have diabetes? Is it safe to have children when you have diabetes?

Answer:

The causes of diabetes can be multiple and complex. Therefore, it is difficult to predict if and/or when a child of a diabetic mother will develop diabetes. Pregnancy and diabetes are compatible, with care from the proper team of specialists.
