Question: From Toronto, Canada: What is the difference between child diabetes and adult onset diabetes? Answer: Child diabetes is usually Type 1, or insulin dependent diabetes. It occurs from autoimmune destruction of the insulin producing cells. These patients require insulin daily to sustain life. Adult diabetes is Type 2, which is different. These people make insulin, it's just that their bodies don't use it properly. Their treatment can involve medications which help their bodies to produce insulin, or use their insulin better.
