Question: From Arizona, USA: I have a 16 year female daughter with type 1 diabetes. She has been diabetic for 8 years. What is the effects of Depo-Provera shots to a diabetic? Can they cause diabetic ketoacidosis or contribute to it? Answer: According to the Physician's Desk Reference, Depo-Provera may cause an increase in blood sugar. However, this is manageable with close glucose monitoring and should not preclude its use. There is less risk to your daughter from birth control, than from pregnancy.
