Question:

From Umina, NSW, Australia:

Could diabetes be prevented by following a balanced diet?

Answer:

This is a good question and one that frequently surfaces. It does not appear that Type 1 diabetes can be prevented with an excellent diet or eliminating sugar. Type 2 diabetes is related to genetic tendencies and seems to be related to weight. So if a person has several relatives with type 2 diabetes and is overweight, we would try to get them to lose weight, especially if their blood glucose levels are on the higher side of normal (fasting plasma glucose of between 110 and 126 mg/dl). So, following a balanced diet for these folks may not actually prevent the diabetes, but if the diet is reduced in calories and the person also gets in extra activity, they may be able to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.
