Question: From Michigan, USA: I am a 34 year old female with type 1 diabetes. Am I at a higher than normal risk to have a baby with Down's Syndrome or other genetic problems? Will my children have a higher probability of developing diabetes? Answer: Diabetes does not increase your risk of having a child with a chromosomal abnormality such as Down's Syndrome. If diabetes runs in your family, then your child may be at higher risk of developing diabetes later in life. You may wish to consult further with your endocrinologist about this matter.
