Question:

From Indiana, USA:

My best friend is 25 years old and has diabetes. She has had diabetes since she was a few years old if that. She gave birth about 3 months ago to a little girl. She has been practicing safe sex and a few days ago went in to have the birth control shot and she found out that she is pregnant again. She has had miscarriages in the past and sustained kidney damage with this last pregnancy. They almost lost her twice. She doesn't want to have an abortion but she is afraid if she doesn't she will die. Is there anything she could do to save her's and the baby's life? Would a surrogate mother be possible at this point? She is only a few weeks along. Any information would be greatly welcomed.

Answer:

Your friend's choices at this time are to terminate or continue the pregnancy. The fetus cannot be transferred to another uterus. Given her history, if she continues the pregnancy, then it will important for her to be cared for by specialists in diabetic pregnancies.
