From Massachusetts, USA:
My 13 year old daughter has had diabetes for five years now and also has been diagnosed as hypothyroid, and is on replacement thyroid hormone treatment. Her blood sugars are higher than they were two months ago also. Can the thyroid gland affect blood sugars and if so how?
Thyroid hormones generally increase blood sugar. They impair insulin action as well as increase hepatic sugar production. Their effect towards glycemic control can be ameliorated by just adapting an higher insulin dosage.
