From Washington, Missouri, USA:
How do people get diabetes?
You will find more detailed answers on this site and those linked to it. Diabetes is due to a combination of genetic makeup and environmental insults (unknown but probably includes virus infection) which cause the body to turn its immune system on the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas and gradually they are destroyed. When this process is around 80-90% complete, there is no longer enough insulin around to keep the blood sugar under control. The sugar rises, it appears in the urine together with a lot of water, the loss of which causes thirst. The body burns fat to use as an energy source and the person then loses weight and starts to feel ill.
