Question: From Edgartown, Massachusetts, USA: We have a 5 year old girl, diagnosed with type 1 IDDM at age 3. We are having a very difficult time with potty training. We understand her predicament, especially when her blood sugar runs high. For the most part, she is in the normal range. We've tried everything. We need any advice,and/or reassurance. Answer: Have you talked with your primary care provider about this? Toilet "training" is a pretty complicated and sometimes emotional process for parent and child. Let the person who knows you best give you individual advice. In general, in my experience is that kids with diabetes are not different in their readiness to "train." When the blood sugars are high kids with diabetes are more likely to have accidents, or bedwetting due to the increased volume of urine. LM Original posting 5 Jan 1999 Posted to Behavior
