Question:

From Dublin, Ireland:

Is there a list of antibiotics available that can be given to diabetics? Usually these seem only to come in a strong sugary base and as when diabetics are ill the blood sugar readings tend to be quite high, adding sugar only seems to exacerbate the situation. Our doctor is never really sure which ones to administer and often the pharmacist is unclear also. This is for my son who is aged 4.

Answer:

Any antibiotic that is considered appropriate for the infection in question can be given. It is obviously best to give sugar free medicine but the small amount of extra sugar will make little difference. Remember too that during 'sick days' extra insulin will probably be necessary anyway.
