From Kansas, USA:
If insulin is given after a meal, does it work in controlling your blood sugar level?
It depends on the insulin and the individual situation. Regular insulin works best if given before the meal by 20-40 minutes. This allows for some absorption of the insulin to match the rising blood sugar from the food which has been eaten. Humalog begins to work faster and is usually given just before the meal. In some situations Humalog is given after eating with good results, such as young, finicky and unpredictable little kids! If a person has delayed gastric emptying from diabetes, then to prevent hypoglycemia, some people would give their insulin after eating, when the blood sugar starts to rise.
Speak to your own health care provider for specific recommendations for your situation.
