My 8-year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 7 months ago. Lately, she has had problems going low during the night and waking up with high blood sugars (over 250 mg/dl), the rebound effect. She usually goes to bed with a reading of around 100 to 120. We've begun frequent night time testing and sometimes catch her before she hits the bottom of her low, administering some juice and most of the time her waking sugars are much better.
Are there any nighttime snacks you can recommend that can get her through the night? Is there some combination of protein, carbohydrate and fats that have been found to have a slow release in the body so she's less likely to go low?
Some children have success with a product called NiteBite. They contain some fat and a little protein, but he important ingredient seems to be uncooked cornstarch which seems to break down more slowly and provides a source of glucose for a longer period than other starches.
I would suggest you might also want to check with your diabetes team to see what their guidelines for giving extra food at bedtime for blood sugars within a certain range. You may want to have blood sugars a little higher than the 100-120 range.
